Good thinking--Madero came from a relatively wealthy family in Coahuila that owned haciendas. He was seen by many as a "benevolent hacendado," in a system where hacendados were local symbols of the oppression of campesinos. Understanding his background helps us to understand the limits on his willingness to bring those who had supported him during the fighting into his government once he became president.
