Fascinating point, Connie. Figures like Orozco and Villa certainly knew of Madero's background (as did many of their supporters). He was seen as a "progressive hacendado" who understood how to treat campesinos well. Why wasn't that enough to help him maintain the support of rural masses, do you think?
